Filmed on location in Africa, this Tarzan epic is considered by many critics to be the best of the genre, with Gordon Scott playing the character in keeping with the persona created by author Edgar Rice-Burroughs, rather than the inarticulate parody so often portrayed by Hollywood.

There was no "Jane" in this tale - Sara Shane played an adventurous heroine named Angie, and insisted on undertaking almost all of her own stunt work.

Sara's interpretation of the role was recently recognised by an internet fan e-zine  as the "Best Non-Jane in a Tarzan Movie".

Also in the cast were Anthony Quayle and Sean Connery in one of his earliest roles. Director was noted action director John Guillemin.
